Milk Analysis Lab
Purpose: the purpose of this lab was to test three different types of milk to find the percentage of protein, water and carbohydrates present in each milk.
Materials: 1% milk, whole milk, skim milk, filter paper, oven, dropper, acetic acid, ring stand, funnel, 50ml beaker, 100ml beaker, 150ml beaker, graduated cylinder, and scale.
Data:
Whole Milk Mass (g) Percent in milk Percent Efficiency
Protein .91 7.4% 217.2%
Carbs 2.25 18.34% 226.6%
Water 9.11 74.24% 83%
1% Milk Mass (g) Percent in milk Percent efficiency
Protein .79 5.29% 139.2%
Carbs .56 3.88% 53.8%
Water 3.4 23% 25.8%
Skim Milk Mass (g) Percent in milk Percent Efficiency
Protein .87 4.2% 110.5%
Carbs 1.47 7.14% 187%
Water 3.23 89.3% 22.12%
Conclusion:
In this lab we tested three different milks, 1%, skim and whole milk to find the amount of protein, carbs and water present in each milk. We first took a graduated cylinder and measured 15ml of each milk then inserted 30 drops of acetic acid into each. We then set up a filter system with a ring stand, filter paper and funnel to separate the protein, water and carbs from each milk. After being filtered for a while, the three milks were placed into the oven where the water was evaporated leaving the protein in the funnel paper, and the carbs in the bottom of the beaker. We then weighed the mass of the filter paper
