ART 5OO WORD SUMMARY

I have chosen to write about Paul Cezanne - a post - impressionist and Salvador Dali - a surrealist. Two artists working in different periods and styles. I will be comparing their methods of visual communication, key aspects of their work and why they are important designers.

Paul CÐ"©zanne was the son of a banker in Aix-de-Provence, who studied painting in Paris. He loved Impressionism, and like Renoir, tried hard to paint interpretations of his own experiences. He painted 1300 paintings in his career, which were all very mysterious, as none of them were dated and only a few were signed. His first few Impressionist exhibition from 1874 to 1877, were criticized, which made Cezanne apprehensive about displaying his work. He moved to his family home and spent most of his time alone there except for a few visits to Paris. It wasn't until the late 1890's that CÐ"©zanne finally got some recognition for his work when his influence was shown in the paintings of younger artists. Many of these artists observed CÐ"©zanne's tendencies to be rude, nervous, and slightly offensive. In 1920, he gave up impressionism altogether and combined more elements of design in his work. Because off this move, CÐ"©zanne is thought to be the father of modern art.

The unusual shape of the tabletop reflects the different viewpoint CÐ"©zanne took up while painting the picture. This style often flattens the picture plane. His paintings often show objects from different perspectives, creating distortion. The fauves were influenced by CÐ"©zanne and also used distortion. The cubists took this influence to more extreme levels however.. E.g. Picasso.

In this painting we can clearly see influences of the Japanese prints because of the flatness. Cezanne was clearly influenced also by the impressionists because he uses
