Sammy’s Jumbo Franks Case
1. Can you identify any difference between the first and second shifts that explains the weight problem? If so, when is this difference first detectable?
Shift one and shift two sample weights are within the normal production range of 4.9 to 5.1 ounces. Although, while reviewing the process control charts, the first noticeable item is the increased variation in the hot dog weights of shift one compared to the second shift. While both shifts do have variations in the weights of the hot dogs, shift one variation appears to be more significant than second shift variation. The most notable variation is the sample 7 for both shifts which was the first sample conducted during full production. First shift had a sample measure of 5.017 ounces compared to the second shift sample measure of 4.963 ounces. First shift sample was slightly higher than the mean while the second shift sample was slightly lower than the mean. Why would there be an increase in the variation between the two shifts during full production? These notable variations in the sample weights of the hot dogs between the shifts causes concerns there may be production process errors that are increased when the shifts are running full production. Further review of the process control charts verifies the concern regarding the production process during full production. There appears to be no consistency in the variation of the hot dog weights between shift 1 and shift 2 except the notation that there is more variance in the weights at full production. What process is being skewed more during full production that at less than full production? The extreme variation at full production verifies the necessity to monitor the production process further to determine the cause of the significant variations in the hot dog weights.
2. Explain what Ronald Wilson should brief to the VP of Operations during their weekly production meeting.
Ronald Wilson, SJF’s quality manager, should brief the VP of Operations on the data collected to identify the issue with the variance in the production of their jumbo hot dogs. Based on the data, we can see that a degree
