/Specific purpose: To persuade my audience that gambling is addictive, and people are being hooked in many ways.
Central Idea: Gambling is a major source of income for local, state, and federal income, but to many Americans gambling is a serious addiction, becoming an uncontrollable behavior that can lead to financial and personal ruin.
Introduction
Attention:
I. Gambling addictions affect an estimated 3,000,000 Americans, and statistics show that one out of every 10 people who gamble will become pathological gambler.
II. Whether it is bingo, sports betting, or high-stakes roulette, all games of chance are a potential threat to persons at risk for gambling addictions.
III. Gambling addictions have the same characteristics as other types of addictions including mental preoccupation with the behavior, disregard for the negative consequences, loss of control, and progressive worsening of symptoms.
IV. Today I would like to encourage you to be aware of how gambling addictions come about and how you can go about treating this disease.

I. Gambling is considered by many as a form entertainment
A. Living in Kentucky, we all know gambling is a huge part of the states income through horse racing and lottery.
B. Also many people, especially senior citizens, participate in another form a legalized gambling taking part in nightly or weekly bingo games.
C. Another thing is casino gambling and river boat gambling

II. As I said in the opening an estimated 3 million Americans are affected by a gambling addiction and this number will continue to rise if something isn't done.
A. Gambling addictions can affect many aspects of a person's life whether it is financially, socially, and/or mentally.
B. After losing a large amount of money an addict will begin a process known as chasing, which is trying to win back their losses. This can put a person in a bigger hole than they can get out of.
