Sex in the Media

To the Editor,

Everyday people are subjected to some type of unwritten restraint because of ethics or censorship in their daily lives. This oppressive way of life represents how we have grown up and what we have been taught by generations before us. Freedom is achieved through the fight for liberties and rights, and in today's generation, censorship is an ever-growing restriction and constraint put on society, primarily with the usage of a natural occurrence, sex. If we want a truthful and honest society, be truthful to children. Let them know how we are all created, teach and inform them about sex, don't keep them in the dark by talking about storks, birds, and bees.

In most forms of media, there are numerous rating systems on things such as movies, music, and television shows (Time). These rating systems are a perfect example of unjustified biases constructed by the government, and censorship committees/associations. Why do some people get to decide what the rest of the country can and can not view? Why do they deserve this vast power to be given to them over others?

The public needs to realize the monopoly the government has. The reason we are all subjected to regulations is because, in essence, the government owns the air. The FCC licenses frequencies on airwaves, which is supposed to be a public resource (Time). Based on ratings of the Howard Stern show (which is a very liberal radio show based on sexual topics), the public is displaying a demand for sexual freedom and because of limited sources for it, the few that are very liberal, do very well with ratings (Time).

Opposing views on such a controversy vary from person to person, and also from one organization to another. Society can not make up its mind of what exactly nudity is. When a child is a year or two old, pictures of them naked are considered "cute", but for some reason as they become
