How to specify and select efficient materials to be used for the manufacture of a project based on strength and durability

-Materials must be selected or designed for their ability to support the loads imposed by the building over the whole life of the building. A way of testing this ability is to place the sought material onto a stationary object and begin applying load on to it until it deforms and/or breaks while recording the maximum load capability.

-It is industry standard to use materials that are readily and easily maintained. The level of maintenance of can be gauged by exposing said material to varying conditions and elements while recording effects the physical structure of the material.

Gears

Use of mechanisms in the 'shark attack' automata

In the 'shark attack' automata the two mechanisms used are cams and gears. The use of gears grants the automata the ability to covert the vertical spinning of the crank handle to the horizontal rotation of the rotating disk, this is achieved by meshing two gears at a 90 degree intersection both of which are held in position by two rods. The other mechanism used in the automata is the cam. The cam is used to move the hands of the man stuck in the boat up and down as if he were trying to call for help, this degree of motion is achieved by an off centred cam moving a rod up and down while connected to the arms of the man. The cam is connected to the same shaft as the crank and gear, so when the the rotating disc is spinning the the arm of the
