Should society discourage introversion in favor of extroversion ?
Everyone is unique. Societies these days tends to have an impression for people who doesn’t blend well in social activities or events. They are categorized and labeled as nerds, weirdos, and a outcast . Is that really true ? No. Unique individual personality makes the society as a whole. The society would be a plain old boring white sheet of paper if not for the divergent.
In Cain’s book, Quiet: The power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, she defined introverts to have a preference for a quiet, more minimally stimulating environment. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, DSM-III identified society anxiety as a sickness. Large pharmaceutical companies spent millions advertising or rather introduce this new diagnosis to the public after the diagnosis. DSM-IV later mandates that only when one shows anxiety “interferes significantly” or “market distress” in sufferer are consider a sickness that need to be treated. A research conducted by Professor Wilson and concludes the finding of the research in his book, Evolution for Everyone, “But rather a diversity of personalities maintained by natural selection” (143). Our society identify the traits of shyness and stage fright as a weakness in one’s personality. Parents, relatives, school teachers, friends and employers, all thinks that introversion among children is something bad and consider a fatal flaw for their future development. They would try various way to cure or induce them to be more extrovert as they thinks this will favors more to their odds to survive and thrive in society in their later life.
The misconceptions are so deep that introvert people are often considered an outcast by the society. We must adapt and learn more on this matter to stop the misconceptions. As Cain said, “Shyness and introversion….are not just normal. They are valuable. And they may be sessional to survival of our species.” According to the book written by Cain, introverts are valuable and not rather more intelligent in a way that they digest information, thinks before they acts and statistically evidences shows that they are more creative. Most people in the creativity industry are more introverts than others. Artists, engineers, and designers work best alone and not in a team. “Sitters” are more likely to survive under certain circumstances as they observe and analyze the danger before acting on it but under some scenarios “rover” thrives in new environment because they adapts more quickly (143). This implies that us, humans, are biological engineered to have different traits in order to survive and thrive in the evolutions.
