On the cold, windy day April day our boat pulled up to the starting line, sweat trembling down my face. Anticipating the announcer to say "All boats aligned; ATTENTION ROW!" With adrenaline running through my body we began the race the race with a power twenty pulling out in front of all the other boats, by a half of a seat.
"Don't let them walk on you!" our coxswain would shout into the microphone. "You guys are out in front, you can't lose this now!" that made us push ourselves even, more so we wouldn't lose the lead. Having a half a boat lead on the other teams shocked us, the rowers, but we didn't have time to think we just had to row and pull our hearts out.
As we passed our high school's tent, the parents cheered in shock not believing that we were in first. As we reached the sprint, the last five hundred meters of the race there was no way that we were going to lose it and not win the gold. We reached deep inside and used every last bit of energy that we had left, knowing that there was no one that we were going to let this one slip away from us. We learned how to work as one instead of nine different individuals.
When we passed the finish line and hearing the air horn go off first for us was a sigh of relieve, knowing that we were New Jersey State Champions. Receiving a gold medal was the most rewarding experience that has ever happened to me. There is nothing better than knowing that I beat the best of the best.
Winning this medal has taught me that if I push myself I can achieve anything I put my mind to, even when no one believes that I can achieve my dream or goal. I say to them, "Anything is possible."
