CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

         Modern technology has improved over the years as it innovate newer technology to achieve daily tasks with less effort. The researcher chose this topic to focus on the issue of smart phone use inside the classroom and how it affects the locale. Busch (2017) stated that mobile phone can negatively affect concentration, communication and sleep, or increase fear of missing out, procrastination and stress.

INTRODUCTION

        Using cell phones for non-task related purposes during class time has been shown to have negative outcomes on student learning; it also has a negative effect on the students in close proximity (Pulliam, 2017). Smart phones are built for users to easily complete a task but not to use for procrastination that students usually use them for. According to Barnwell (2017), using phones for learning requires students to synthesize information and stay focused on a lesson or a discussion. For students with low literacy skills and the frequent urge to multitask on social media or entertainment, incorporating purposeful smart phone use into classroom activity can be especially challenging. This minicomputer device can be such a distraction. It is acceptable for some teachers for student to use devices for searching up definitions or using calculators. But the downside of smart phones is its issue concerning students not being able to focus to discussions.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Prohibition of smart phones and gadgets inside the classroom and during class is implemented yet students tend to sneak their phone and use them while the teacher discuss. The researcher focuses on the negative effects of this issue by relying on the respondents that will be gathered in the process of this study.

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

        The researcher assumes that respondents would agree that students will be affected negatively from using smart phones in class.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is for the purpose of gathering data to readers and to those who will also benefit.

  • STUDENT – They will be aware of the negative effects of frequent use of phones during class. This study will inform them about the view of teachers towards the issue.
  • TEACHERS – They will know more of the disadvantages and negativities of smart phones to their students
  • FUTURE RESEARCHERS – They will have more information to obtain for their study with a similar topic as this research paper

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study aims to enumerate the disadvantages to students of using smart phones inside the classroom. The responses of the respondents will be defined in this study to be explained further for supporting information.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

        This study will be conducted on Senior High School teachers of Southern Luzon College. This study is focused on smart phone use during or inside classroom only and its disadvantages. The data will be gathered through survey and the responses will be analyzed for the benefit of this study.
