Smoking Ban
Smoking has become a common habit among many people in the American Society. In previous years, no one against smoking spoke up and expressed how they felt about it. Recently, more and more people have begun to speak up about their rights to not having to be around smoking, or second hand smoke. A group that has been started against smoking is called "Stand", in reference to their saying "Stand Up and Speak Out." This group targets teenagers and encourages their help in eliminating smoking around them. The group runs frequent ads on TV citing many statistics and facts about the dangers of smoking. Because of this group and others, laws have been established within cities banning smoking in public places. This has created a great dispute because the people who choose to smoke can no longer smoke in the restaurants or bars where they previously enjoyed the luxury of smoking in. The reasons supporting the smoking ban outweigh the argument of those in favor of smoking in public places. Three main points supporting the smoking ban are unattractiveness, unhealthiness, and the literal right of the non-smoker.
Appearances have become a major factor for making judgments about something or someone. With that in mind, it is easy to conclude that those who do not smoke are more then likely to keep their distance from the people who choose to smoke. It is said that you cannot tell if someone smokes just by being around them. This statement is false; people who smoke usually smell like smoke, and even have cars or houses that smell of smoke. Another indicator is the color of their teeth; smokers tend to have a more yellow tint to their teeth. Therefore, if these people are regular customers at a public place, they have the potential of scaring off non-smoking customers. Non-smokers do not enjoy being around the smoke because it smells, and it makes them smell as well. This dislike results in a negative net gain for the business, and plays only a small part in why the smoking ban should remain in place.
It is a well-known fact that smoking is simply unhealthy. Studies have proven that smoking is not only a health concern to those who directly smoke a cigarette, but also to those who inhale the cigarettes smoke. Second hand smoke is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States. The direct smoking of a cigarette not only puts the toxins into ones body, but also a tar like substance onto the lungs. This is the smoker's choice to ingest these unhealthy chemicals, while it is not the choice of the non-smoker. Smoking cause's cancer to ones body and the toxins in cigarettes can also do other bodily harm. Since smoking degrades the human health, it is not fair for smokers to endanger the life of others while they are partaking in an unsafe, unhealthy act. This act puts everyone involved at a high risk of ending up in a hospital due to unnatural causes,
