Social Responsibilities for Wal-Mart & Target

Wal-Mart and Target are two of the largest retail stores in the United States. They are both well-known for their convenience and their wide range of products. Wal-Mart and Target's primary focus is their consumers who are potential employees, consumers, and investors. Having a positive presence in the community that they serve and aiding in economic advancements are key to both companies. Wal-Mart and Target are constantly trying to develop different ways in which they can market themselves as a socially responsible employers while offering a wide variety of opportunities to their potential candidates.

In today's job market, a company's social responsibility has become increasingly imperative. Much emphasis is put on how a company can demonstrate its concerns for the environment, human rights, community involvement, and ensuring that their employees needs are being met. In the eyes of consumers, prospective employees and investors, these companies have displayed that they not only care about increasing their profits, but also that their presence in the community is presented in a positive light. Even though their ultimate goal is to increase their profits, these companies want to get more involved with the people in the communities surrounding their locations.

Considering that Target is their largest competitor, Wal-Mart executives and promoters work diligently to attract its employees through the social responsibilities they practice in surrounding communities. They have campus ambassadors on different college campuses that allow the attention to be drawn to them immediately at the beginning of each school year. Dealing with young adults and employment opportunities as a campus ambassador draws a tremendous amount of interest from the students.

Target also holds recruitment fairs on campus and off campus to seek employment, not only with the students, but within the community, which is always going to be beneficial for the company and longevity in the community. Another key aspect that Target promotes is their interactive website. As soon as you click under the "careers tab", there are several opportunities for every type of student that is in college as well as non-students. The website also enables you to click under different cities and find out where and when each event is located as well as where it will be held. These are just some things that Target promotes that Wal-Mart could utilize in its desire for social responsibility.
