“Spotswood”

In this movie we are shown the inside of a blue-collar factory that produces Moccasin shoes. The reality behind this business is that as time passes it slowly becomes more out of date and less efficient. The owner of the firm is getting older each year and less and less interested in the changing business environment. When Erroll Wallace is asked to assess the current situation of the firm he is astounded by the inefficiencies and lack of organization within the work place. He quickly institutes his own regimen to try and increase worker productivity and make the factory run at its best possible output. However, his business tactics are not necessary and don’t fit the internal environment in which the workers have come so accustomed to.

The costs associated with increasing the efficiency are that workers need to be laid off, the social atmosphere within the shoe factory is cut down and overall quality of working life for the employees is diminished. For this factory making it more efficient is looked as an evil corporate idea. These workers have done their jobs inefficiency for so long that the changes are seen as unnecessary. With that said the benefits from increasing the efficiency was not seen too much for this company. However, for other companies that when they become more technical it allows major increases in profit and output. Typically, they can enjoy more success then a company who is less efficient.

So overall the benefits and costs felt by efficiency are associated with each individual company and the internal environments, plus other factors as well.
