Spanish Education should not be stopped
An issue that was recently brought up by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich offended Hispanic people. At a speech to the National Federation of Republican Woman Gingrich commented that "the American people believe English should be the official language of the government...We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto". I am Hispanic and I think that his comments are offensive and wrong for several reasons.
Newt Gingrich said this because he is afraid the Spanish language will take over and Anglos will lose power. There is no reason for him to think this because English is already an international language. It is also not good for Anglos to have all the power either. What I mean in this statement is that there should be an equal amount of power, not just between Spanish and Anglos but between any other languages and nations. That would maybe lead to world peace, which means many wars and arguments would be stopped, like the Iraqis and Palestinians who are fighting for their land. Gingrich is afraid of differences and change, so he says that "bilingual education should be stopped". He once again said something that most Hispanics would not agree on because he himself does not know how to speak Spanish. Most Hispanics in the U.S. would not agree that bilingual education should be stopped, because there are thousands of Hispanic or Latinos in the U.S. who speak Spanish as their first or second language. Also some Anglos who appreciate the Spanish language and know the beauty of it would want their children or themselves to learn Spanish or more about the history behind it.
