Starbucks constructed a successful business based on the concept of good customer service and high quality products. Core values, short and long term goals and the mission statement of the company are the guidelines which are a common objective for all stakeholders. The ability for Starbucks to align these goals and objectives with the principles of the businesses operation will assure the financial success of the company.

Starbucks Value Statements

• Provide an enjoyable work environment by treating each other with respect and dignity.

• Embrace diversity as an essential component in the way we do business with customers and co-workers.

• Recognize superior customer service and quality products are essential to the financial success of the company.

• Contribute positively to our communities and our environment.

The value of providing employees with an enjoyable work environment and the ability to treat each other with respect and dignity is in alignment with Starbucks strategic efforts to provide quality training to each and every employee. Those desiring to train for a barista position will be provided adequate training to meet the high expectations of creating a quality product for each and every customer. In addition, higher salaries for baristas will increase moral and compensate for the expertise required to provide premium coffee products to customers.

Starbucks values and the treatment of external stakeholders have resulted in a drop in sales as a result of the company’s inability to maintain high standards for the coffee and service they provide. The new strategic plan recognizes superior customer service and quality products as being essential to the financial success of the company. Reestablishing the mission statement to incorporate the value of providing quality service and products are aligned with being in the people business to serve coffee rather than being in the coffee business to serve people. The new strategic plan will align with Starbucks value to focus on the customer to offer a quality product and great customer service.
