Strength of Love Like an Arch in John Ciardi “Most Like an Arch This marriage”
John Ciardi “Most Like an Arch This marriage” state the two people must have a good and firm love forever. Love forever as marriage is very strong love, two people meet as marriage will become inseparable. The speaker emphasizes that a marriage cannot be separated by comparing with an arch, which is strong and cannot be separated or torn down. In John Ciardi’s poem, the speaker interpret an arch symbolized as a marriage which keeps their love, have longing and complement each other.
The speaker symbolizes the two pillars of an arch as two people which keep their love forever. The speaker compares an arch with marriage by using simile. It is very obvious when the speaker uses the sentence “Most like an arch” in the beginning of the stanza. “Most like an arch—two weaknesses that lean into a strength Two fallings become firm.”(Line 5-6). When two people unite as a marriage, they become one strength and always keep their love forever like an arch which have two pillars to sustain the link above the two pillars. And also, the link of the two pillars symbolize their firm love as a marriage. So, whatever obstacles they face, they will always keep their love in order to stay intact.
The speaker portrays the two people have their longing and then they unite as marriage. The speaker tries to describe feeling how someone really needs significant other in his life, a life partner. “All I do at piling stone on stone apart from you is roofless around nothing. Till we kiss”(Line 10-12). It feels like when someone has longed to someone that very important in their life or arguably feels like someone missing half of him or her. “Till we kiss”(Line 12) it feels like they become together for a long time and maintain it until the end of life. The separation of two people who have each yearning will become whole forever as a marriage.
