Introduction

Learning can be a difficult task to anyone who wants to expand his or her knowledge. With the help of online schools, learning has stepped into a new environment that is growing rapidly. Secondary education is now possible for students who want to complete his or her degree online. This might not necessarily be the ideal education for some students but it is perfect for others. A student in an online school must learn to use his educational skills and tools to ensure that he or she receives the maximum benefits of college online. This Student Survival Guide will help all online students including myself get the most out of their distance learning education.

Setting and Achieving Goals

The first step in achieving anything of significance would be to put forth an action plan. This action plan will help any student go about accomplishing what he or she desires. This plan is basically a set of goals. One should set short-term and long-term achievable goals, which are set up to show the progress that the student is making. The long-term goal would be viewed as the final result of the action plan. There can be multiple long-term goals but it would be important for the student to have one plan for each long-term goal. Short-term goals should be like stepping-stones in the direction of achieving the main long-term goal. Short-term goals should also be attainable to help build confidence for the student and to also show advancement. Setting and Achieving Goals will be a very play a very important role throughout one’s online learning experience.

Managing Time Wisely

Time is a very precious commodity. Because there are only 24 in a day, it is vital for an Axia College student to ensure that ho or she is using his or her time properly. Any college can be demanding, but online learning takes considerable time management. Many of the students that attend online schooling are generally not “traditional” college students. In addition to attending online classes, some students are also full-time parents and full-time workers. This means that it is imperative for the student to plan out time in his or her day to make certain that their schoolwork is completed. Online classes do have attendance policies which must be met to make sure the student is following along. There are also Discussion Questions that need responses which also demand the student’s time. This is why any student should plan out his or her day and leave enough time to complete their distance learning requirements.

Upholding Academic Honesty

There are times when students do not manage their time wisely. Some students scramble to put anything together to turn in for an assignment. Some students cheat. Any cheating by any student should not be tolerated. Cheating can be anything from copying another student’s test answers to copying another author’s report or essay. This is called Plagiarism. This form of cheating is prevalent in an online learning environment. Not only could the student possibly fail his or her class, but he or she could also be expelled from their school. If it is necessary to use comments or writings from any other writer, one should make sure that the words are properly referenced. Upholding Academic Honesty is very important to one’s education. If one is trying to cheat, and he or she gets away with it, they are not only cheating their school but also cheating themselves.
