In man's attempt to reach the nearest stars of this galaxy the Jordan Foundation sent a ship in the year 2119. It was lost. This book is about what might have happened to that ship and it's passengers and crew...

Several generations later the purpose for the Trip has been lost and all believe that the ship is "the universe". In the lower decks are the so called civilized people and mid decks are neutral territory and the upper decks are occupied by the "muties". The muties have discovered that the universe is not just the ship but something much bigger: Stars, planets, and other galaxies.

Hugh, a young man from the civilized area, born into a common family, is selected to become a scientist, (which in this world relates to the priesthood). Hugh reaches scientist hood and lives peacefully in the world, but there are some questions in his mind. To learn the answers to these questions Hugh travels to the upper decks. He is soon captured by Bobo, a dwarf mutie with enormous strength and a not so enormous vocabulary. Bobo brings his new capture to Joe-Jim, the two headed "head honcho" of one of the mutie gangs in hopes of "good eating", but this is not the case.

Joe-Jim allows Hugh to stay and learn all he can from the stolen books in his apartment. Joe-Jim soon takes Hugh higher up in the ships sectors known as "No-Weight" and shows him to a room whose door says "Control Room". In the control room is a chair with controls to different functions of the room. The lights go out and Hugh sees what Joe-Jim calls the stars, and the stars are moving, which means...the ship is moving. After he is convinced of the fact that the ship moves much happens.

After many conflicts and trials Hugh and Joe-Jim convince a few others that the ship is in a much larger universe and that it moves. The others begin to help them find out more about how to move the ship but they are
