The Rise of Ragged Dick by Horatio Alger
Dick was a shoeshine boy who lived in poverty with his clothes all torn and buttons of jacket gone. One day, Dick encounters a high class gentleman who tells his nephew that he is unable to tour him around the city that day. Taking his chance, Dick offers them instead to tour him around for a day since he knows the city well enough. First, both are skeptical of him, but sensing honesty in his face and voice, they gladly bring him into the hotel and clean him up. They also prepare Dick with decent clothes. Soon, Dick and Frank come to become good friends. When they depart, Frank advice him to have hope and one day he will become anyone he wants to be. Mr. Whitney, FrankЎЇs uncle, present Dick later with $5, and asks to later help boys like Dick after he becomes successful. With this he cleanses himself and settles himself in a better room with warm bed. After that countenance, Dick worked hard and earned more, and at the same time, learned to read, write and do geometry from his friend. Another day, Dick was in a ferry boat running an errand when a little child fell off the ferry. At once, he swam to retrieve the child, saving his life. He is greatly awarded for his deed by an almost drowned childЎЇs father. After confessing his dream and what he wish to be, the father offered him a good paying job of $10 a week.
