According to John Bragg, the SUV is the main symbol of America. The SUV displays our power, our freedom, and the fact that we are the greatest country on Earth. The SUV also displays our consumption of fossil fuels, and that is why the SUV is one of the most hated symbols of consumption. SUVs have been under attack since their introduction in the 80s. Bragg claims that the Greens are so opposed because of the fact that SUVs threaten air quality, increase pell-mell, and use more gas than other vehicles. Why are SUVs not banned or drastically altered in some way? According to Bragg, the SUV is still largely the same because it is the perfect vehicle for Americans, they are safer, have more space, have more power than other vehicles, and provide personal independence. Personal Independence, when referring to the automobile, according to Bragg, is a chief virtue, because it means that we have the ability to go just about anywhere. Also, the protection value of an SUV is much higher than in a smaller car. Environmentalists state that nature is valuable, because it provides air, water, and food, and it should be kept largely the same to help benefit mankind the most. Yet, according to Bragg, if environmentalists truly want to help mankind the most, then they should support it, because it give us a means to enhance our lives. The greatest day in a teenager’s life is the day that he or she gets their license.
