Symbolism in Theater and Cinema

The movie “Jaws” portrays a man-eating shark that scares the citizens and visitors of a small town in Amity Island from recent events. Although great white shark are the largest predatory fish in the ocean, it best represents our culture we live by today. According to "Merriam-Webster" (2015), culture, is a way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in a place or organization such as a business. With today's culture there are many top successful individuals and prosperous businesses, just like the great white shark, they are considered to be at the top of their food chain. With the status these people and organizations have on society, it allows their decision-making process effect how we as a society are influenced. In the movie “Jaws”, when people witnessed the massive fish they panicked with fear and tried everything to avoid the fish. Successful individuals like Donald Trump people would attempt to prevent a conversation with him because of his status and influence he has in today’s society with his businesses.

In order to bring this major motion picture to Broadway there are a lot of different aspects you have to consider to make it as life-like as possible; being as close to the movie without leaving major scenes out of the play. According to University of Phoenix Reality Through The Arts (2012), scene designers use the same tools of composition- line, form, mass, color, repetition, and unity- as painters. In addition, since a stage design occupies three-dimensional space and must allow for the movement of the actors in, on, through and around the elements of scenery, the scene designer becomes a sculptor as well. Other things to consider are lighting, sound, costumes, and other essential features such as sound effects and make-up.

The genre of this play would be considered a drama/thriller due to the unfortunate events that take place. The elements used to make this play as realistic as the movie would be lighting, sound, backdrop, and props. Lighting would be used to accentuate the ocean during the day and at night. It will allow shadows to be placed on characters in the scene that is being played out. Sound is another significant factor that bring the set
