Have you ever wondered what it was like to attend a technical high school? Attending a technical high school can be a negative experience because it does not prepare and individual for a higher education, and the certification might not lead to a career path. Sitting down with your parents as an eighth grader, filling out the application and hoping your grades are good enough to make the cut. Finally the day comes when your letter arrives, and you’re anxiously awaiting to hear the response from your parents of the school decision. Congratulation you have been selected to attend Worcester Vocational Technical high school class of 2008.
It’s the first day of your freshman year of high school, and the nerves have already began to set in. There are so many career paths you can take, but at the age of fourteen who really knows what they want to make of themselves. Many decisions I encountered were based of friendships, a few luck ones getting into their first choice, and the rest unhappily settling for second and third choices. I did not place into my first choice which was cosmetology. I was given my second choice early childhood education, I lasted three weeks and realized this shop was not of me. Sitting in the guidance counselors office hoping for a way out, culinary arts and drafting were my only options. I decided on culinary arts because everyone needs to know basic cooking skills.
Most understanding the materials that are being given to you is a stressful situation. Especially having students could get used to the idea of only attending academic classes every other week. Sure that sounds great but in all reality you have to work twice as hard. As well as completing your shop work, and any other testing they require. Moving at a fast pace and not some teachers who constantly repeat “there are students who are doing just fine maybe you should work a little harder” which does not help the situation. All student learn differently in my opinion, they should receive guidance in ways to better themselves not be put down. If guidance is given and the do not jump to the opportunity then I believe it becomes their own issue.
