As consultants, in order to provide their services efficiently and accurately to clients, it is important to identify what types of clients should they target at and the roles that their clients play in a consulting service.
The first thing that needs to be mentioned is that there are also different types of consultants. Different types of consultants provide consulting services to different types of clients.
- The target clients that consultants provide management or strategy consulting services can be the CEO, the Senior Vice President, other senior executive management, a senior management team in large-scale companies or startup companies.
- The target clients that consultants provide IT or technology consulting services can be the CTO, the senior management or the technology department.
- For public relations consultants, their clients are mostly the whole company or celebrities to control what others think about the organization or the individual.
- For legal consultants, their main clients are a company or an individual who want to solve, understand or prevent the potential or current legal issues.
- For consultants that provide financial advisory or investment services, their main clients are the economic department of a company or an individual who want to make investment and balance the checkbook.
- For human resource consultants, their main clients are HR directors and managers, work councils, or internal HR department in a company.
Generally speaking, the types of client that the consultants are facing can be an individual, a team, a department in a company, the whole organization, or the combinations of them.
Secondly, the role of the client is also essential to be known by consultants. There are several different kinds of roles that the clients can act as.
- Clients that contact or are contacted by the consultants through phone, email or other social media.
- Clients that participate in meetings, discussions and presentations in the projects.
- Clients that pay the consulting fees.
- Unwitting clients – members of the organization or client system above, below and laterally related to the primary clients who will be affected by interventions but who are not aware they will be impacted.
- Indirect clients – members of the organization who are aware that they will be affected by the interventions but who are unknown to the consultant.
- Ultimate clients – the community, the total organization, or any other group that the consultant cares about and whose welfare must be considered in any intervention that the consultant makes. [1]
