SETTING
The setting of the story takes place in the 1800's in Canada's Prince Edwards Island. Anne Shirley (the main character) was adopted by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. She was an eleven year old orphan. Matthew and Marilla needed a boy about the same age as Anne to do the work around the farm because they were getting to old. Bet when Matthew got tot he train station to pick the boy up, only Anne was there. A few days later, Anne starts school. She seems to like it, and is making new friends, but her happiness is spoiled when she meets Gilbert Blythe.
CONFLICT
The conflict of the story is that when Anne goes to school, she meets Gilbert Blythe. Gilbert Blythe is trying to get Anne to notice him. When nothing would work, he finally grabbed her long, red hair and yelled, "carrots!" Ever since then, Anne hated Gilbert for calling her carrots in front of the whole class and making her embarrassed.
