The Age of Miracles Response: Julia and Seth’s relationship

Want really stood out to me in this section was the progression of Julia and Seth’s relationship. What first started off as a secret obsession has turned into a full blown friendship and somewhat of an intimate relationship. The boy that Julia secretly watched and longed to know and the one she has barely spoken to, except for a few instances in the past, has finally invited her to go with him to see beached whales. This was the first time the two children felt a mutual bond I believe. They spent a whole day together and you could tell that it had a huge effect on Julia. “I was a little bit in love. I’d spent an entire afternoon with Seth Moreno.”

Their relationship has a little bit of a dry spell after that, but then takes off more than I could have imagined. Their bond soon began to feel inseparable to me. Julia no longer feels that she is alone in this world. People also began to notice the change in her. When Michaela invited Julia to her party with the hopes that Seth would also come with her she said “I felt a burst of pride that she thought of us as linked”. And to me they are linked in a type of way. The both share a lot in common. For example, they are both mature for their age. They did not care too much for superficial things like parties and what others thought of them. Both of them were invited to the party, but they decided to reject the offer and spend the night watching movies at Seth’s house instead were they end up kissing. She finds comfort in Seth and has never felt more comfortable around somebody before. She even feels comfortable enough to tell him about her father’s affair with Sylvia. They both have family issues of some sort, so she felt like Seth would understand where she is coming from. Julia’s life was full of madness and I feel that Seth is her was a way to escape it and be somebody else entirely.
