Balcony Scene

In the 1960’s version of the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is trying to get away from his people and is trying to get into Juliet’s backyard. In this version, Juliet is up on the balcony and Romeo is under it looking up at her. He is speaking to himself about her and she is speaking to herself about him before they start talking to each other. Towards the end, Romeo leaps up and kind of hangs off the balcony. The 1996 version starts off with Juliet on the balcony, but then she comes down the elevator. Romeo is hiding and when he shows her that he is actually there, Juliet is so surprised that she grabs onto him and they both fall in the pool. Most of the words are exchanged in the pool, but Juliet goes back up the elevator to say their goodbyes and the end of the balcony scene ends the way Shakespeare wrote it. In the 2000’s version, it is the same thing as the 1960’s version just with different people playing the characters. Another difference is that in the 1968 version Romeo is silent and sneaky when he comes to Juliet’s backyard. In the 2000’s version, Romeo seem kind of clumsy.

In the 1990’s version of Romeo and Juliet is my favorite balcony scene because it is different from the other two versions. Romeo tackles Juliet in a swimming pool which made it more interesting for me rather than just talking because they are face to face and there is more emotion in that. It also had more action in it which was better for me. I also like the fact that I know the characters like Leonardo DiCaprio from other movies so it made it more fun to watch. It also seemed more modern even though they were speaking lines from Shakespeare’s play.
