The main conflict in “The Cask Of Amontillado” was that Montresor was insulted by Fortunato. Montresor wanted revenge but also didn’t want to get caught. So Montresor lured Fortunato into the catacombs and planned out his revenge.
In “The Cask Of Amontillado” irony is used throughout the story. One example of verbal irony is when Montresor first sees Fortunato at the carnival and says “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met.”. This is irony since Fortunato is not actually luckily met by Montresor since Montresor murders Fortunato later into the story. Another way irony is used is when Montresor says “"Come," I said, with decision, "we will go back; your health is precious."”. This is verbal irony since Montresor doesn’t care about Fortunato’s health and even later kills Fortunato. One last way they used Irony is when Montresor and Fortunato drank some wine and Montresor toasted and said “And I to your long life.” This is irony since Montresor actually wants Fortunato dead.
In “The Cask Of Amontillado” symbolism is also used throughout the story. It is used in the coat of arms of the Montresor family. The motto was “no one attacks me with impunity” It is basically the plot of the story; Fortunato insulted Montresor and Montresor takes revenge.
Another thing that is used throughout the story is diction. It is used with the word recess. In “The Cask Of Amontillado” Montresor chained up Fortunato in the recess of the wall. Recess is basically a space created by building part of a wall further back from the rest.
They also used diction when using the word “Impunity.” They used it in the Montresor’s motto “no one attacks me with impunity.” Impunity is the freedom from punishment. Just like every time when Fortunato got away without punishment.
