The Country Of Tainted Water

The small country of Haiti has been through so much over the years. Whether it is the lack of government, lack of capital, or the devastating effects of malnutrition and disease, the one real problem that has plagued the Haitians is the lack of clean water. Hundreds and thousands of people die every year, making Haiti virtually a death camp of a country, Lack of money is really the main concern; there just isn't enough capital to provide the Haitians with the proper water management throughout the entire country.

Many countries have helped the small 27,500 sq. km country. The United States first occupied Haiti in 1915, which led to changes in the public health field. The US has also helped with the nation's water problem with the US Army Corps of Engineers, building bridges and dams. Other countries have set up funds to send to Haiti as well. Many micro-banks have been set up to start up a new economy in hopes of stopping the poverty level from rising.

Still an ever-growing problem, the water contamination of Haiti is only getting greater. Many of the poverty-stricken people have been told that the only way to have clean water is to mix it with bleach. That's all good and well until you look into the price of bleach and how expensive it really is to these people. Some families cannot provide food by itself, much less bleach. The poverty almost has spread like wild fire and there is no way of extinguishing it. The only true way to fix the problem is to turn the nations' economy upside down and start over.

Most of the programs that are helping the people of Haiti are from different countries setting up clinics, with properly trained doctors to reduce the spread of infection and disease. The world should be aware of this growing problem, and how much help these people really need. More and more die every year for what reason? The reason is unfortunately too broad to narrow down to one source. Once water treatment facilities are set up the country of Haiti could quite possibly break out of the continuous cycle they are now so accustomed to.

Another predominant reason the water is so tainted is the lack of proper sewage throughout the villages. Human waste and garbage build up and begin to emit toxins straight into the water supply. These water supplies are mainly wells, so anything that seeps into the ground is bound to go through the ground water. Along with the toxins are air pollutants from the older model cars that do not have any standards for emissions, a situation which will eventually lead to acidic-rain. Damaging all the nations' water and causing and even larger problem. Not all of Haiti is completely trashed; the nation still has its wildlife and jungle like environments. But these are as well going to go if nothing is done to help out this poor country and the innocent children trapped within its contamination.

Water treatment facilities don't require much funding especially since treating water consists of mainly running water through minerals and sand. To properly cleanse the water, it must run through a series of filters; these filters are fairly inexpensive and would not be hard to get. Or if the population had 300 dollars to spend on one of the fancy systems that some companies have begun to sell in the country. But even if they did have the funding, the nearest place to purchase a water treatment system is always going to be far. And with no organized roads there is no way of really getting there efficiently by car, most travel has to be on foot.

The children of Haiti are in a very bad situation as well. Many children are orphans that have lost their entire families to disease. There are many diseases that infect the region none really serious in the beginning but due to lack of medical care, they soon grow much worse. These orphans all suffer from malnutrition and other common sicknesses related to no food and unclean water. Some are helped by the religious groups formed to help out with relief other suffer and could possibly die without proper care.

There is schooling available but is still really in the works, most Haitian people are illiterate due to the fact there was no proper education available. These education facilities teach the younger and older population various requirements needed to succeed in an actual job in a larger city. Many of the religious mission groups have set up schooling that combines schooling and church activities to educate the people in two ways instead of one. Most of the schools are packed with people eager to learn because there truly is nothing to do except for staying alive, providing food and water.

If the water problem were fixed there would be a lot more productivity, creating jobs for the people. The lack of government is the main problem with the entire economy. Once Haiti pulls
