The Creation of Adam vs. The Virgin of the Rocks

Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo are two very famous artists from their time. They still have some of the most famous pieces of art. Michelangelo's paintings are full of color, which is bright and distinctive, while Leonardo's is submissive and rather blended together. Also, Michelangelo's shapes and lines are noticeable and stand off from their backgrounds, while Leonardo blends his images to stay away from silhouette distinct shapes or lines (Douma 2006). Michelangelo and Leonardo both have paintings about a biblical event in which reside in chapels.

Michelangelo created an amazing work of art, The Creation of Adam, 1511. Adam is in the nude, with soft coloring and "masterful foreshortening" (Douma 2006). It is a painting located o the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He made many paintings relating to Bible stories. This painting in particular relates to the story when God the Father touched Adam, giving him breath of life. He gave him breath through the touch of his finger. They never actually physically touch, it is just belief of God's power. Angels and an oval mantle encircle God.

Leonardo created The Virgin of the Rocks painting in 1483. It is oil on panel painting and its size is 78 3/8 x 48 1/16 inches. This painting is an expression of the Immaculate Conception, which states that Christ was conceived without the sin on Mary's part (ABC People 2005). The painting was placed on an altar in the chapel of the Immacolata in the church of San Francesco Grande. The painting is a Virgin and child in the center with two angel musicians on the side panels. The de Predis brothers painted the two side panels. There are two versions of the painting, one in Louvre, Paris and the other in the National Gallery, London. The Paris version was the original, which was in the cathedral.
