The death penalty has been one of the most controversial debates throughout history. However, in modern civilized society, many countries have abolished the death penalty. Everyone’s life is precious. Criminals cannot be arbitrarily deprived of life even by the government. Many people think death penalty is necessary for some criminals. However, the death penalty is a violent and brutal act that is against human moral principles and does little good for the country. Therefore, the death penalty should be abolished for three reasons. There is the death penalty not as good as expected, an essential part of social progress and decreasing financial burden.

Firstly, the primary purpose of death penalty should be deterred people from breaking the laws, but the effects are not as sound as people expect. According to some investigations, over the past 20 years, the government has increased many rules about death penalty in the stature; however, the rate of murder, rape and some other criminal offenses did not decrease but even increased. The reason why that phenomenon appeared is that some people who were preparing to break the law always thinking they are lucky enough to escape from the punishments of the government. Furthermore, a part of crimes occurs in unexpected situations which called passion commits crime. In these cases, the criminals commit the crime in the condition of losing control, so they do not know that they have done in the following. No matter which condition the crime is, the death penalty will not deter crime.

Secondly, abolishment of death penalty is great social progress. In China, there is an old saying, “life for life.” It affected many people and became a part of Chinese culture. Moreover, most people do not realize the fundamental right of every human being is be alive, and nobody can deprive one person of life, even if it is in China. Besides, during the Feudalism period, many penalties could result in death, which many people think is cruel. But in fact, the death penalty is the same as those penalties. People would be considered foolish and evil ones in the future. Therefore, the government should lead their people to change the wrong concept and build up a civilized society.
