Racial prejudice is a negative attitude towards a group of people based on race. Throughout decades of history, people of colour, both young and old, have endured a multitude of hate and discrimination just because of the colour of their skin. In the movie, Remember the Titans, a school football team defies the odds and finds ways to unite everyone. The film makes a pointed effort to closely examine discrimination in the lives of the characters by focusing on; unfair refereeing, the power of teamwork in overcoming obstacles, and challenging tradition to create racial harmony.

In the film, the T. C. Williams High School football team must find ways to overcome adversity, including; facing unfair treatments from the directors of the school boards. During a game, it becomes apparent that the referees are biased against the Titans. Upon seeing the chairman and other board members in the audience looking on with satisfaction, coach Yoast realizes hat the game is rigged. This is significant because audience members see that no matter how successful the team is, they will always receive a plethora of hate from the white privileged majority. It demonstrates the severity that the community’s prejudice has on the team, the sport, and the game. The effects of this inequality are displayed through the actions of the characters, as coach Yoast decides to give up Hall of Fame nomination to show his resentment towards members of the board.

Teamwork is displayed throughout the movie, which, in turn, benefits the whole community in a variety of ways. The two groups in the Titans learn to cooperate and trust one another in an effort to overcome racial prejudice. For example, during the movie, Gerry sticks up for Petey, who is involved in a conflict with a group of white students, and he successfully breaks up the fight. This demonstrates how working together as a team assists the characters in overcoming negative situations, brought on by discriminations. There are multiple instances when the black players rely on their white teammates to get through the hatred and biases they experience throughout the film. It is evident that discrimination takes its toll on the players as a team, nonetheless, with support and teamwork, overcoming these struggles becomes easier.
