The Effects of Food Advertisements and Childhood Obesity
Introduction:
Obesity is an epidemic that is plaguing children and families causing many health issues. When children are obese during childhood, it increases the likelihood of obesity in adulthood. A contributing factor is junk food that has very little nutritional value. These food options have been targeted toward young children and teenagers. This work will focus on the causes of childhood obesity and its effects on families.
Background and Significance:
Due to the steady increase of reported cases of childhood obesity and the long-term health implications it has become a significant need to reverse this trend. While television advertisements may not be the only cause of childhood obesity, it is important to understand the effects of these ads. Further research into this subject will aid those who are battling obesity, the public and future generations.
Procedures:
The research questions investigated in this study are as follows:
- What is the relationship between physical activity levels and childhood obesity?
- How does childhood obesity correlate with academic performance in elementary school children?
- What is the correlation between obese children and the television programs they are viewing?
- What are respondents’ preferences in food choices?
The sample that will be used in the work will consist of elementary students in upstate New York.
With parental consent, respondents will answer questions about their daily routine and their behaviors will be observed. Both academic and health records will be reviewed and analyzed.
Results/Expectations:
The results will be demonstrated with statistical data in the form of a table.
My expectations of this study is to show the causes and effects of childhood obesity. This will work will be able to be utilized as an informational tool for those wanting to learn more about this problem.
