In the book, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald has a message of social values. Nick Caraway, a young man from Minnesota, moves to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. Nick rented a house on a part of Long Island called the West Egg. He becomes very wealthy after meeting a girl. Fitzgerald uses Nick Caraways experiences in New York to show how geography influences the social values of people living in that area.
Nick Caraway sees himself as a sympathetic and non-judgmental individual. He views himself as highly moral. Although Nick lives in West Egg he is unlike his neighbors. He was educated at Yale University and has many social connections to the upper-class in East Egg.
In the East Egg districts of Long Island, alluring appearances cover ugly realities. Tom and Daisy Buchanan have social connections and have an inherited upper-class social standing. Inspite of these things their marriage is desperate beneath the service. There is an inner emptiness in the social class of the East Egg geographical area.
Jay Gatsby lives in the West Egg district next to Nick. He lives in a gigantic Gothic mansion. Gatsby has a lavish display of self-made wealth, but does not have the social connections nor the refined social status like the people in the East Egg. His elaborate parties that he throws at his mansion shows that the upper-class in the West Egg were looking to make connections with the upper-class in the East to make them rich.
In conclusion Fitzgerald uses Nick Caraways experiences in New York to show how geography influences the social values of people living in that area. The character in the novel, Nick Caraway, was originally from a different geographical area therefore he had higher social values and was well educated.
