The methods Warden Matthews used when dealing with inmates seems to work adequately. The inmates grow to trust and respect the warden. It is much more acceptable, in my opinion, to treat the inmates in a kind manner and keep the tension low. By paying attention to the inmate's needs and ideas Matthews has shown them he takes them seriously. Often if you treat people how you like to be treated the same will be returned. Warden Matthews was also successful in not appearing weak. Inmates were intimidated by him also. Although the Warden's actions appear to set uneasy with his personnel it still seems sufficient to the prison.
Allowing Little to room with Bowles seems reasonable. Little is in danger in prison. He is considered a weakling. Bowles is the best security Little could hope for. Bowles protected Little from being abused by other inmates. Also, Bowles kept Little comforted as a friend. As a friend Bowles gave Little advice and got him familiar with other inmates and guards reputations. The guards even get some benefit out of the arrangement. The guards don't have worry about providing Little with what petty amount of protection they usually offer. Therefore, Little and Bowles rooming together does seem ample.
The way Slacks treated the inmates worked out better than previous ideals. Slacks proved to the inmates that he shall not tolerate any disruptive behavior, and if you complied with his wishes you shall receive privileges. Although most don't necessarily agree with this method it made things run a lot smoother at the prison. The Cubans truly tamed themselves when Slacks had taken over. Slacks tactics proved to be exceptionally satisfactory in the Cuban block.
