A manager that is a directive democrat does not allow employees to participate by giving their input, but does make major decisions democratically. For instance, a manager of a newly opened fast food restaurant would be a directive democrat. Opening the restaurant, the manager would have his own ideas of how the restaurant should be run, what kind of business he/she wants to bring, and how the employees should conduct their work. Therefore, being new and their opinions not fully valued, the employees would not be expected to express how they feel about issues in the restaurant on a daily basis. However, when it comes to major decisions (i.e. a new drive-up lane, a new grill, new counters, remodeling the inside, etc) the input of the employees would be taken into account.

A manager that is a permissive autocrat allows participation from employees, but makes decisions alone. For instance, an editor in chief of a major magazine like Vogue, would exercise permissive autocracy. Before every edition is put together, the editor in chief holds a meeting with their writers that are in charge of different sections, and makes decisions as to what they will write about. All the employees and the editor gather at a table and the manger listens to the ideas that each writer puts forward. The manger allows the writers to voice their opinions in this sense, but makes the final decision of what each writer will write and publish.

A directive autocrat makes their decisions based solely on their desires and points of view. A factory plant manager oversees their employees and monitors their progress while they work so that production can run smoothly and efficiently. The close supervision is implemented so that the factory plant manager will be able to oversee all of the production and have the information needed to make decisions without any other authorities to advise him.
