The New World vs Pocahontas
Did you know that America won't be America if it wasn't for the Jamestown settlement ? If Jamestown wasn't a successful colony we could've been a french, spanish, or native speaking country. Jamestown was the first successful colony in the New World, established in 1607 by the British men. Those men were sent over by the Virginia Company of England to seek for gold. For our project, we were to watch two movies that contribute to Jamestown, ‘The New World’ and ‘Pocahontas’. Yes, Pocahontas, the beautiful, Disney princess we can always find just around the riverbend. Although the movies are similar, I feel as if ‘The New World’ was more historically accurate because of the of the realistic details in the movie.
The reason ‘Pocahontas’ is not historically accurate because it based on a realistic event but is portrayed fictionally. The movie is about the start of the Jamestown settlement, but it was more focused on the love between Captain John Smith and Pocahontas. At first, Pocahontas was scared of John because of the things the colonist had planned, like trying to build a city, and bringing the “savages” civilization. Some news Spread around to the Powhatan indians about the settlement being made, they went to spy and ended up losing a brother, this started the hate between them. Pocahontas and John had to see each other secretly because the strong hate between their people. After another one of their brother had been kilt, they captured John and planned to kill him. Pocahontas then explained to her father how hate has taken over their positivity, she also told her father her love for John, ending the hate between the people.
‘The New World’ was most definitely historically accurate because it explained every little detail that took place. The movie let us see all struggle the people went through, compared to ‘Pocahontas’ where
