The Open Window
Vera seemed to be a complex character. She clearly has a vivid imagination and an interesting sense of humor, but she is a compulsive liar without caring for those around her. Nuttel, the protagonist of the short story, was a little bit courageous but does not really care much of how he looks to others, he seems weak and vulnerable.
a.) Nuttle visits Mrs. Sappleton because she is one of the people that his sister has said that he should visit. He should visit her to prevent his mental issue from recurring or getting worse. b.) Frampton worries about the welfare of the birds because Mrs. Sappleton talks about bird hunting.
a.) Vera asks Framton, "Do you know many of the people round here?" not only did she break the silence but also to find out if Frampton knows anything about her family. b.) Both.
a.) "The child was staring out through the open window with dazed horror in her eyes." talking about Vera. b.) Framton Nuttel reacts so intensely to the appearance of the three figures approaching the open window because he has been thoroughly convinced by Vera that the three male relatives are all dead.
a.) I think Vera is more believable because her actions are those of someone who is mature and trustworthy. And you would not expect someone mature and trustworthy to tell such a huge lie. b.) In analyzing Vera's behavior, what might you conclude about her motives? She is mean or bored.
Saki is often described as a master of wit and humor. Would you describe this story as witty or humorous? Explain.Witty, Mr Nuttel encounters the type of person in Vera that he should stay away from to help his nerves.
Vera likes to find someone to believe her stories and get a reaction out of them. Framton Nuttel was drawn in and became a victim to her story.
