I read the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The book is about teen gangs, the Greasers and the Socs, in Oklahoma. Ponyboy and Johnny are the main characters in the Greasers gang. One night they end up getting into a fight with one of the Socs, and he ends up dying. The boys then run away from home. Soon Johnny and Ponyboy come home and must face the consequences along with all there other Greaser buddies. In this book, there is three major character differences I noticed in the book compared to the film which is Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Johnny.

In the book, Ponyboy is the main character. At the beginning of the book, Ponyboy is walking home from the movie theater then a car of Socs pulls up and they try to cut his hair but don’t because other Greasers come and save him. In the movie, Ponyboy really does get some of his hair cut off before his friends actually get to him. Ponyboy has two older brothers, Darry and Sodapop. He doesn’t get along with Darry, but he has a great brother relationship with Sodapop. In the movie, he still has that good relationship with his brother. Like in the movie, Ponyboy does get jumped but he never gets cut in the book. Another difference is when the Socs try to drown Ponyboy. In the book, Bob beats up Ponyboy and then tries to drown him but in the movie three Socs jump him and all of them try to drown him.

In both book and movie, Ponyboy has two older brothers, Sodapop and Dally. Sodapop gets along more with Ponyboy. In the book, Sodapop has a horse named Mickey Mouse. The horse is mentioned when he is talking to Cherry. However, Mickey Mouse is never mentioned in the movie. In the ending of the movie, while thinking to write something for his assignment he looks at a picture on the mirror of Mickey Mouse. The horse is never mentioned in the movie but we know it exists in both the book and movie. Besides the horse, in the book, Sodapop gives Ponyboy money, but in the movie he didn’t.

Another main character
