The Parranda

General Purpose: Informative

Specific Purpose: Inform about a family tradition

Central Idea: The Parranda is a lively Christmas tradition full of music and dancing.

INTRODUCTION

I. Attention Material

A. It is midnight and I can hear the instruments and my family singing outdoors "Abreme la Puerta" (open the door). It is a Parranda.

B. Parranda is the Spanish word for Christmas caroling, it is a tradition that has been past along by many generations. It is very typical from Puerto Rico.

II. Orienting Material

A. The Parranda is one of my favorite's family traditions.

B. I believe it brings us closer to family and friends.

Transition: For the Parranda to take place the musicians must gather and practice at least the opening tune with the singers.

BODY

I. The instruments used are the guitar, congas, maracas and the gÑŒiro.

A. The Congas are made of wood and a tunable skin.

B. Maracas are made from the fruit of the higuera tree, taking out the pulp through a small hole, filling it usually with rice and then fitting a handle.

C. The gÑŒiro is a very peculiar instrument, made of wood or metal and carving parallel grooves on its surface. The "Pua" or scraper is what plays the instrument.

Transition: The songs singed in the Parranda are called Aguinaldos they are like Puerto
