Once teenagers graduate from high school, most of them are just thinking about getting away from home, going to college, and having a good time. College, on the other hand, is not all about having a good time. There are many responsibilities that go along with college such as going to class, getting homework done, and possibly even getting a job for the first time. Many of these issues cause countless problems for teenagers, and adults for that matter, which requires a rethinking process. This process allows the recent graduate to realign and refocus in order to discover the responsibilities needed to succeed in the "real world."

College is the time when kids are away home for the first time and when taking responsibilities for actions becomes extremely important. For most young adults, high school was a breeze and worries about things such as finding a place to stay, paying bills, or even fixing supper for themselves were minute. Therefore, some kids may find the transition between high school and college very difficult because parents have always provided the basic life necessities without their children's knowledge or in some cases assistance. Young adults, like their parents, have to start finding a way to take the initiative to succeed at the responsibilities that were handed to them in high school. The earlier young adults can make this transition, the sooner they will become a responsible adults.

There is a balance that needs to be achieved between cutting loose and partying versus settling down to commitments. Whether the commitments are classes, a job, a sports team, or a significant other, taking responsibilities for commitments is a vital part of the real world. If a kid in college goes out and parties every night and does not go to class the next day, their actions are irresponsible and will probably result in flunking out of college. Sometimes people have to know when to go out and have a good time and when to stay home and do work. Once a person has found a balance between cutting loose and settling
