The Truth about Antonio’s Dreams
In the book Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya there is a boy named Antonio; he has dreams that seem to show the future but also seem to give him more question then answers to his problems. Rudolfo Anaya really captivates the dreams in such a way that has me thinking that they aren’t the future but that Antonio's dreams do not show the future but show that he is confused and has questions that he cannot answer; when he falls asleep his mind tries to answer the questions swirling in his head. Bruno Bettelheim says "dreams are the result of inner pressure which have found no relief, or problems without solutions and to which the dream finds none." I think this is true because of all the situations when Antonio goes to bed and wakes up or in his dreams he has questions that he can’t answer. This is bad because it over stresses the mind.
Antonio would sometimes go to bed with questions to his problems. One time was when his brothers came home and then they were going out, drinking, going to a brothel in town and just seemed lost to Antonio. "I remembered when they built our house. They were like giants than. Would they always be lost to me?"(72) Antonio was wondering this when he went to bed. Going to bed with questions is hard on your brain because while you are asleep your mind is still up and working on your problem instead of resting.
With going to bed with questions you also wake up with more questions than you started with or while in your dream you ask yourself question that you can’t even answer. “These are the men I’ve seen dir. I cried. Who else will my prayers accompany to the land of death?” (257)Here Antonio is asking a question in his sleep that is mind has been swirling around. This is also bad because, as I’ve said earlier when you go to bed with questions, your mind is over working itself and not giving itself a break.
