THEA 101: Into to tech theatre
Elmer’s rubber cement is a very good material to use for a wide variety of projects. 8 ounces of rubber cement costs about 6 dollars. Obviously, the price will vary based on the amount. For a gallon of this material, it is about 40 dollars. It can be pretty pricey. Rubber cement is commonly used as an adhesive for artistic projects. It is a unique adhesive because it has a sturdy grip on what it is put on, but can be removed fairly easily. In situations where cement or plaster would be too much, rubber cement is an ideal median. It is also quite a bit lighter than cement. It has the convenient liquid texture of glue, and the strength to hold more heavy duty objects.
Painting with rubber cement is also possible. A known technique for painting with rubber cement is using it with water color. In you apply a thin, transparent layer of rubber cement to the paper, the water paint will not show up on top of the rubber cement. This is useful for making lines in the painting that have the same color as the base canvas.
There are some down sides to using rubber cement. It is a flammable substance. Applications involving large amounts of heat should be avoided. This limits the amount of situations where rubber cement would be an option. It also has a potential for abuse. The chemicals in the substance can be inhaled. This also makes the substance unsafe to have around children.
