THIN IS IN

The popular media have for many years increasingly held up a thinner and thinner image as the ideal for women. The presence these extremely thing women effects how girls view their own image. The media seem to have left the full-figured women in the dust and now only portray women as Barbies come to life with no room for fault. Selling their product is more important to advertisers rather than showing average women, which teens can relate to. This unrealistic image of women as supermodels only lowers one's self esteem. A child's body image develops as the result of many including how people around her react to her body and how she looks. The media largely affects what a teenager feels is society's standards for the "ideal body". The unrealistic image media portrays of women leads teens to have distortional body images, health issues and even financial concerns.

The media has an extremely immense impact on the way young teens view different ideas including their own body image. Teens will take any measure because the television and movies influence them and promotes wrong standards for body shape and size. Many teen girls link the image of being thin to emotions such as happiness and love. Magazines focus their articles on appearance and teens begin to see models as realistic and idealistic. Obviously it is impractical goal to obtain by young adults when the women in the media are being air brushed and digitally enhanced. Because of this perfect body image being perceived as the normal many girls find extreme techniques to gain confidence. There is direct link between media exposure and eating disorders is evident.

All over the world young girls experiment doing just about anything for a quick fix on their body because of the media's impact and results in extreme health issues. One of the common diseases among girls who want to lose weight is Anorexia. This disease characterized by lack of calorie intake, excess working out and distorted body image is very destructive to the body. Although young girls might find this to be an easy solution to their lack of confidence overall is an ineffective solution. When the body does not get enough food, the metabolism slows down and therefore does not help
