Instructions For Changing A Tire

People change tires when they have a flat tire, when their tires go bald or when the seasons change. (Ex: During the winter changing summer tires to winter tires.). These instructions will show you how to remove and replace your tires safely.

When changing tires you can expect to spend 5 -10 minutes on a single tire. To change a tire you will be raising the car a couple of centimetres of the ground, loosening the nuts on the tire and yes, that is right YOU will be raising the car off the ground.

To change your tires you will need

  • Spare tire/new tires on rims/the seasonal tires on rims.
  • A car jack and supporting arm.
  • A ratchet set.[pic 2]

Required Steps:

  1. Find the correct socket from the ratchet set that fits the nuts on the tire that needs to be replaced.

  1.  Fit the socket onto the ratchet and in a star pattern loosen the nuts of the tire that needs to be replaced.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                            [pic 7]

  1. Place the jack 8-10 inches away from the tire that needs to be replaced in the direction of the rear/front tire. The jack should be placed underneath the car beneath a thick broadening that runs along the side of the car. Check the owner’s manual to make sure the jack is in a proper position.

  1. Turn the jack’s supporting arm to raise the car. Raise the car enough so that the tire may be removed without making contact with the ground.

[pic 8]

  1. Using the same ratchet completely remove the 4 or 5 nuts on the tire that needs to be replaced. Place the nuts in a small box or a safe place in order to not lose them.
  2.  Pull the tire towards yourself off the threaded studs; thus off the hub.
  3. Hold the new tire in both hands and make sure the air valve is facing you and place it onto the threaded studs.
  4. You must tighten the nuts in the same manner they where loosened i.e. the star pattern.

[pic 9]

  1. Turn the jack’s supporting arm so that the car can be lowered. If the car starts to rise turn the jack’s arm in the opposite direction.
  2. Once the car is completely lowered, keep turning the jack a few times so there is no interference between the car and the jack.
  3. Remove the jack and place it in the trunk.
  4. Tighten the nuts on the new tire completely in the star pattern using the ratchet.

Changing a tire is a very simple task and requires zero knowledge in mechanics. As long as you’re able to choose the right socket for the nut and place the jack in the correct position you should be fine. Although some newer cars require a computer before you can change the tire, in this case you have no choice but to hand your car to the dealer.
