It is said that the anonymous man in the Potomac River, characterizes the best a human could possibly be. I know that nearly every human is capable of acting as heroically as the man in the water. Yet I don’t believe every person has the will power to be that courageous. Of course there is the fact that in today’s society there are people without his physical endurance. A Person’s values also play a tremendous part in whether or not a man is willing to risk his life to save a stranger. Lastly, my generation is selfish, so it is difficult to say that someone could show such selflessness. I know that every person has the capability to be heroic, yet there are very few with the will power.

Not every person is physically strong enough to be a hero. The man in the water was described as strong and a very good swimmer. In reality, not every person is muscular and if you are like me, not every person can swim. I’m sure there are other situations where you can be a hero without the physical endurance, but in most cases you have to be stronger than the other victims. Lack of physical endurance can keep you from being courageous.

A person’s values can also distort their will power to save a complete stranger. Perhaps if you were raised to care for others and to be selfless then you will have the will. Yet if you were raised as an only or spoiled child, then you are more likely to be selfish. The way a person was raised, and the values they have, will affect a human’s will power to save a complete stranger.

Lastly, my generation is very lazy, spoiled, and selfish opposed to past generations. My generation has not experienced any major disaster or we just ignore them. I doubt that there is more than one person in Worland High school that would risk their life to save a Stranger. So it goes back to values and the way you were raised.
