Chapter 1
*Jem and Scout meet Dill.
*Dill dares Jem to touch the house; Jem does it and the window flickers and they get scared
Chapter 2
*Scout went to school for the first time.
*She already got in trouble; the teacher does not like her because Scout can read; she wants Atticus to stop teaching her.
*Walter Cunningham did not have lunch and scout tried to explain to Miss Caroline that the Cunninghams were poor and did not borrow money that they knew they could not repay.
*Miss Caroline whipped her hand, and sent her to the corner for saying that.
Chapter 3
*Scout was beating up Walter when Jem came over, told her to stop, and invited Walter to dinner.
*At the dinner table, Scout criticized Walter for the way he eats and Cal chewed her out.
*Back at school, Miss Caroline was told that Burris Ewell would never come back to school; this all came up because he had lice in his hair. Burris called her names and stormed off. The kids comforted the sobbing teacher.
*When Scout came home, she found Cal making her favorite, crackling bread.
*Scout told Atticus that she did not want to go to go to school, like Burris; however Atticus knows that they are better people than the Ewells. The entire family cannot live inside the law.
The father made a deal, they would still read together if she went to school.
Chapter 4
*Scout found some gum without a wrapper inside a tree, in the Radley lot.
*Jem came home and told her to spit it out and wash her mouth out.
*The day school ended, the two kids found two polished pennies in the same tree.
*I think that Boo Radley is putting the stuff in the tree.
*When Dill came back a little fatter, they made up the Boo Radley game, where they imitated Boo.
*Scout did not want to play because Atticus knew what they were doing and the day Jem pushed her down the street inside a tire, which hit the Radley house, she heard something laughing.
Chapter 5
*Jem and Dill got close and pushed Scout out.
*So she hung out with Miss Maudie. Miss Maudie explained man things about Boo Radley; the central theme was that he was generally nice and everything bad said about him was bologna.
*Jem and Dill were planning to send a letter to Boo Radley; Scout was against the idea.
*If he comes out they will talk about why he stays in there over a cone of ice cream.
*Dill and Scout stood watch while Jem tried to push it in there with a pole. Atticus foiled the plan. He then tricked Jem into saying that Jem was putting Boo's life on display.
Chapter 6
*Jem and Dill wanted to go to Boo Radley's backyard and peep through a broken shudder to try to catch a sight of Boo. Scout did not want to go but she had to go along with them because she was accused of being too much like a girl.
*They were trying to be quiet and the gate squeak.
*Scout and Jem pushed Dill up to look up the window; he saw nothing.
*When they were moving to a different window they heard a gunshot.
*Dill and Scout got through the fence but Jem got stuck and had to take off his pants.
*Almost everyone was outside the house when they heard the shot. So the three had to go as well to make sure no one thought they were the instigators.
*Atticus saw the absence of the pants. Dill said he won them in strip poker. But Jem said he played with matches because cards were fatal.
*Later that night, Jem went back to the fence and got his pants back because he did not want Atticus to whip him.
Chapter 7
*Scout started 2nd grade.
*When Jem got his pants they were folded and sewed like a guy did it.
*They took gray twine inside the knot whole.
*Next they found soap with two images carved inside, Scout and Jem.
*A whole pack of gum was inside the tree.
*Next in the knot whole were a pocket watch, a chain, and a knife; they together were worth five dollars.
*Boo Radley is putting this stuff in the tree.
*Scout and Jem are going to write a letter to whomever was leaving stuff in the tree.
*The knothole was filled with cement.
*Mr. Radley found out what Boo was doing and filled it.
*Mr. Radley said he filled it because it was dying.
Chapter 8
*That winter, Mrs. Radley died, of natural causes.
*Next morning it was snowing.
*Jem and Scout wanted to make a snowman, and did.
*The snowman looked like Mr. Avery; it was good.
*Atticus made Jem do something to it to not offend Mr. Avery.
*Later that night, Miss Maudie's house lit on fire. The men carried all her furniture out, while the kids watched in front of the Radley house.
*Scout was cold and did not notice when Boo put a blanket around her. Only Atticus saw.
Chapter 9
*Scout is getting made fun of at school because Atticus defends Negroes.
*Atticus is defending Tom Robinson, who is black and goes to Cal's church.
*Atticus told her to deal with what is going to get said to her and not fight anyone.
