Tomorrow when the war began makes us think about the possibility of war. Discuss the possibility of an invasion of Australia?
In Australia we think that we are safe and secure but in reality are we?
The book by John Marsden called Tomorrow When the War Began describes and explains this perfectly. In this thrilling, action packed and dramatic novel he explains how a group of children's happy life's turn upside down by a series of events that happen whilst they are camping in Hell. I think that Australia being invaded is a likely event that could happen in the not to near future. I think it is possible because we supply lots of resources; our defence isn't big enough to survive a full scale invasion and the we have so much spare land that other countries need to make their cities less congested.
I think it is possible because we supply lots of resources. The world is becoming more and more aware of global warming each day, which means more countries are turning to nuclear power. One of the key ingredients in nuclear power is uranium and Australia is the biggest supplier of uranium with a whopping 20% of the world's uranium. So if a country had that amount of one of the world's most valuable resources they could not only run the entire country on nuclear power but they would have a massive political bargaining chip.
Our defence isn't big enough to survive a full scale invasion by a powerful country. Even though we have thousands of well-equipped and well trained men and women, they might not be able to hold off the thousands and thousands of military troops. Even though they mightn't be as well-equipped or trained but they have quantity and lots of it. Then if it was a surprise attack we might not be able to mobilise enough troops quick enough to ward off the invaders.
