Training at Walt Disney World

One main key experience I will take away from working abroad at Walt Disney World in Florida is the ability to create and achieve set ambitions in the workplace. Achieving the created ambition in the workforce was doable through zeal, persistence, learnt skills and constant improvement and learning. During the month of May, Blizzard Beach Water Park was on the lookout for potential lifeguard trainers. The role of the lifeguard trainer is to firstly, put safety first but also, nurture the knowledge and skills of the trainee lifeguards. Nurturing an individual’s knowledge and skill was to mainly adapt the training to their learning style, either it be visual, auditory or kinaesthetic (Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer and Bjork, 2008). Furthermore, to achieve the desired outcome to train an individual to the best of their ability, potential lifeguard trainers who applied for the position was then skills tested for CPR, First Aid and Aquatic safety. Secondly, a class organised by Disney for new trainers was scheduled to learn the basics on training new people. Thirdly, a Jeff Ellis Management and Aquatic Safety class was also organised for potential lifeguard trainers to learn the skills and help further our ability to be better lifeguards. Lastly, multiple on the job training with an experienced lifeguard trainer was scheduled, shadowing the experienced lifeguard trainers was paramount in order for myself to obtain the different types of training done by certain individuals. Having numerous protocols to become a trainer was efficiently organised so that I can learn and observe first hand the different perspectives of learning styles. Through all this, these observations have allowed me to build self confidence in talking to others and having control of any situation that has arisen. Becoming a trainer has impacted my respective workforce by allowing myself to take control of my own training and also those of others. Obtaining the position of a Lifeguard trainer is one step closer to becoming a great leader through seeing the different strengths and weaknesses of potential employees and acting upon them.
