Trends in Organizational Behavior
Numerous trends exist within organizations. In this paper two of the trends will be discussed, the influence of ethics on decision-making and the impact of technology on work-related stress. Ethics can have a big influence on decision-making in the workplace. Ethical behavior is behavior that is either morally right or morally wrong. Whether or not it recognized, people encounter ethical decisions daily. Workplace stress has increased as technological advances have increased. Changes commonly cause stress. I will explore the trend in ethics affecting decision-making and the changes that affect stress with the emphases on technology.
There are not set guidelines that define ethics. Ethics are personal. An ethical dilemma is a situation that one is faced with when a decision must be made that would be measured as unethical and maybe even illegal. "When in comes to the ethics of decision making, the criteria individuals use to define problems and the values that underlie these criteria must be considered."(Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2005, 68-69/14) Everyone has their own set of values and morals. These values apply to the problem one is facing and from there, the ethics assist in guiding in the decision-making. Decision-making has the potential to become the most prevalent test of one's career. One must consider many components in decision-making. "When you are the decision maker, decision making is not just a choice process followed by implementation for the good of the organization. It involves your values and your morality, whether or not you think it should."(Schermerhorn et al., 34/14) The decisions then must encompass one's values and morals, but also solve problems and benefit the organization. Combining ethics and decision-making within an organization setting is extremely difficult. Several scholars have compiled a list of words of advice.
