“Survey List of Filipino Values which contribute to best practices in business organization in Philippine Context”

        Formation of values starts at home, it is instilled by our parents or guardians in our childhood years. They teaches us what is right or wrong, what is desirable or not, what to do and not to do and through the experiences we had, we formed Values. It serves as our judgement about what’s right, good and desirable. It is very important part of every culture, values are convictions as it reflects the way people lives.  Values also affects and generates one’s attitude, behaviour and perception. Us, Filipinos, values are very vital. It serves as our “decision maker”. Filipino Values have also influenced by our ancestors, colonizers and religion.  We, Filipinos, have a lot of good values such as “Bayanihan”, family closeness, solidarity, hospitality, solidarity and religious and some of these values are also being practice in business organization.

        In every business/establishment, core values are being developed as it serves as a guiding principle of on organization. Like with Starbucks Coffee Philippines’ values, my present employer; 1. Creating a culture of warmth and belonging, where everyone is welcome, 2. Acting with courage, challenging the status quo and finding new ways to grow our company and each other, 3. Being present, connecting with transparency, dignity and respect and 4. Delivering our very best in all we do, holding ourselves accountable for results. These core values, if carried out rightly by the members of an organization will bring success in an organization. But what are the desirable values that could contribute success in an organization? What are the Filipino values that plays vital role in every organization?

        We, Filipinos are generally emotional in nature and this also affects the values we portray. One value that correlates with this is Corporate Social Responsibility. Having the value of “bayanihan”, “pakikipagkapwa (shared sense of humanity)”, “pagtutulungan” (helping one another) and charitable formulates Corporate Social Responsibility. It is the continuing commitment or an initiative of an organization to help out in its economic, social and ecological manner. This value really affects the success in business apart from having a good public image not only with its customer but with media as well, CSR also foster positive workplace environment, it promotes employee engagement thus having happy workers which result in being more productive in work. CSR also promotes brand differentiation as it makes one establishment unique from another and lastly, it is cost efficient.

        Another Filipino value that is essential in the success of a business is being hospitable. We, Filipinos are being known for such trait as it comes natural to us. We’re very pleasant as we smile or even talk to people even we just met them. We just don’t sympathize with another person but we empathize with time. In business, it also plays vital role as being hospitable is the foundation of building good relationship with your colleagues or teammates. It creates an excellent and genuine experience with the other person. Being hospitable will give an opportunity to meet different interesting people thus growing one company’s network.
