Violence in schools is a problem today that needs more attention than it is
being given. This doesn't just mean school shootings. This means other violence like assaults, rapes, robberies, hate crimes, gang violence, as well as violence with weapons. I think that there is not enough being done to prevent violence like these in schools.
Violence in schools is a problem that has been going on for a very long time, and this is because not enough is being done to prevent it. For example, only 49% of schools report assaults or robberies to the police. If all schools reported these incidents to the police, then there would be a decline in these incidents. I think that police should have a greater role in schools. There should be more school safety officers or security guards in schools watching out for violent crimes. I also think that all schools should have to report violent crimes to the police and have the student disciplined according to the school's rules, as well as the local government's rules.
There should also be something done about weapons being carried into school. In some schools there are metal detectors. I think that metal detectors should be installed in any school that has a had one or more incidents of a weapon being carried into school. According to recent studies, there are one hundred times more guns in students' hands attending schools than what have been reported to
police. A lot of students have guns in school and are willing to use them, as we have seen in the past. This also goes back to the issue of a lack of police involvement. For some reason, school authorities have not reported incidents of guns in schools to the police. If a student is caught with a gun in school or committing an assault or robbery, I think the it is the schools responsibility to report it to the police.
Other things that schools should do is to perform random locker and bag checks. People may think that this is invading the student's privacy. I think that it is a good way to protect students.
